Go for burgers without the bread and try our fantastic recipe for a naked burger stack with a quick low sugar peach BBQ sauce. Head outdoors in the summer and cook over coals, or use a cast iron griddle in the kitchen. Packed with the power of veggies, and of course lean protein, this recipe is not only delicious but full of some major health benefits too.


Benefits of lean protein aside, the fresh ingredients in this dish pack a powerful nutritional punch. Most vegetables are super low in calories due to their high water content, but they are also essential in our daily quest for health. 

Mushrooms are a rich source of potassium that helps in blood sugar regulation; make them part of your daily diet to make sure you get enough of this essential mineral. Peppers, especially red peppers, contain almost 3 times the minimum recommended intake of Vitamin C; vital for a strong immune system and to prevent winter colds. Packed with valuable phytochemicals, peppers are full of antioxidant and anti inflammatory compounds. Onions are one of the best things you can eat to ensure optimum health. Full of anti cancer, anti microbial and antioxidant flavonoids, such as quecertin, onions are essential in the fight against heart disease.

We all know to add plenty of green stuff to our plate and the nutritional power of rocket is not to be underestimated. From the same family as superfoods broccoli and kale, not only is rocket full of fibre and the green goodness of chlorophyll but is rich in calcium and Vitamin K. Used together in the body, calcium and vitamin K make strong healthy bones. 

The low sugar BBQ sauce makes a good dish into a great dish. Quick and easy to make, it contains a small amount of maple sugar to bring the requisite sweetness and texture. Still a source of sugar, maple sugar does however have a denser nutrient profile than standard white sugar. Use raw apple cider vinegar if you can. One of the healthiest types of vinegar it has many nutritional benefits, least of which is the ability to help lower blood sugar.

1. Heat the grill or barbecue to a steady medium high heat.

2. Grill the whole peppers, mushroom, and onion slices until charred on the outside and soft through the middle. A quick spray of oil will help them along; particularly the mushrooms.

3. To make the sauce, put all of the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer over a low heat until a chutney like consistency is reached. Stir occasionally. It should take about 20 minutes and will need time to cool.

4. When all the vegetables are ready, grill the burgers for 3 to 5 minutes on each side. Add a splash of water at the end. It will sizzle and create steam that keeps the burgers moist.

5. Deseed and peel the peppers, tearing each one in half.

6. Stack the vegetables with a burger in the middle layer, drape with the BBQ sauce, and add a big pile of rocket to the side.
